Our organization would like to welcome you to our website.
In Maryland alone last year we lost 60 young
people to suicide. We hope this site will enlighten you by bringing these
tragedies to the forefront.
The lives of four women, Lisa Hurka Covington, Lee Tolzman, Betty Schmedes, and
Marie McLaughlin, were brought together at a meeting, in 1999, they never
expected to or wanted to attend; a support group of survivors in the Baltimore,
Maryland area who lost a loved one to suicide. Under the leadership
of Lisa Hurka Covington, they organized the advocacy group, SPEAK (Suicide
Prevention Education Awareness for Kids).
The faces on our logo all died of suicide. They wanted the pain to
end, not their life. They entered a dark tunnel, unfortunately, not seeing
the light at the end.
THE BEAUTIFUL FACES TO THE RIGHT ARE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO DIED OF SUICIDE IN
MARYLAND
We need to open a door and allow the
children to breathe freely the fresh air of truth by bringing the
subject of suicide into the light of day. Without the fear or
shame we can create a healing environment for our children.....Linda
